Prime TV Picks: 7 Can't-Miss Films In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique addresses the demanding standards for female beauty and the perceived horrors of ageing. Demi Moore presents a brilliant acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and horrifying process known as this experimental method. This produces a younger clone called Sue, culminating in an increasingly toxic connection among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from reporting on global conflict to join an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, as well as other filthy rich individuals. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard overnight and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, evening, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple disappearances has made the local kids frightened. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence profiting from the people's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, though Chastain manages to show the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's another release from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is with uncovering a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Additional actors take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
